This week we have explored the forest with groups of our morning children.
They have all been very excited to visit the forest and even though there has been rain on most days this has not deterred them from making the most of their time in the woods.
We have spent the week getting used to our surroundings and exploring our boundaries within the woodland. The children have been actively assessing risk and contributing each session to our daily risk assessments. We are teaching the children when we risk assess the woods we must look up high for things that may fall on us, we must look in the middle for things that could poke us and we must look low for things that we may stand on that could hurt us.
Teaching the children to be aware of their surroundings and potential risk is most important in Forest Schools and it gives the children a great grounding for self risk and self care and understanding their own capabilities.
We are very much taking our time to actually get to the forest as there is so much to explore on the way! This week we found Dinosaur footprints, mushrooms, fairy houses and had time to look at the berries on the trees and chat about who eats them and why we really shouldn’t eat them “We will get a tummy ache” “ We will be ill” “We are taking the birds food!”
A Fairy Door!
As you can see from the photos the children have had a wonderful time climbing and sliding up and down the hills.
The cooperation and working together to achieve their goals was terrific and their perseverance when they were struggling was amazing to see. Determination to get up the muddy slopes was fantastic for their well being and physical development.
Once again many thanks to the PTA for kitting the children with fantastic wet suits and jackets this has made a massive difference to our time spent in the woods. If the children are warm and dry they are happy to be out there for the whole session.
Watch out Bear Grills!
Please remember next week will be the turn of the afternoon children. You can find a list of daily visits for your children posted in the nursery.
PLEASE PLEASE bring their wellies every day for nursery even if not visiting the woods the children need them for outdoor nursery play.
