P5B are sent to the workhouse!

This week Primary 5b were sent to the workhouse! We learnt that workhouses were places that poor people were sent if they couldn’t afford food or somewhere to live and they normally were pretty horrible places. The men and women were separated and had to work long hard hours at difficult or unpleasant tasks. For example the men had to do hard manual jobs like breaking rocks, grinding corn and ploughing fields. The women did more cleaning jobs like scrubbing floors, washing clothes and spinning the wheel to make fabric. There were lots of strict rules in the workhouse. For example you weren’t allowed to speak, get drunk or climb over fences!

In return for this hard work the people in the workhouse were provided with food and shelter but this was very basic. They ate bread, cheese, gruel (which is a watery porridge) and boiled meat on special occasions. They often slept with multiple people in one bed in cramped and uncomfy beds. Unfortunately the poor didn’t really have a choice and had to enter the workhouse or they would be imprisoned for being destitute (a fancy word which means you can’t provide for yourself.)

In STEAM we designed some postage stamps and learned about where the postage stamp came from in Victorian times. It was designed by Sir Rowland Hill in 1840 so that letters were paid for in advance which made it a more reliable system. Thanks Sir Rowland!
