P5a and our action packed week!

A long time ago in a classroom far, far away… Primary 5A had a fantastic, frantic week!

As part of our topic, we heard about Mr Cross’ house and discussed the various forms of housing available, and what people look for in buying a house. We then went to the research room to search on a website called ‘www.rightmove.co.uk’ for houses that are for sale nearby, to give us an idea of the kinds of houses we could design for our village. On Tuesday, we started to make houses for our characters to live in, and later in the week we wrote ‘For Sale’ advertisements for each of our properties.

In numeracy this week we worked some more on our fractions, decimals and percentages using fraction walls, adding decimals and solving tricky word problems.

This week was very exciting because we went to Hillend to the Midlothian Ski Centre for our first skiing lesson. Lots of us were nervous but the majority were excited. For those of us who had never skied before, it consisted of learning to put on our boots and skis on, and then skiing with one ski, before building up to two. Miss Griffith fell (just once!) like a starfish and it was hilarious! People who had skied before worked further up the slopes.

Afterwards, everyone was shattered because it had been a long morning, and so we were very thankful that we had the opportunity to see P6 and 7’s outstanding performance of ‘Beauty and the Beast’. Some of our favourite parts were: when Belle and the beast danced, ‘Be Our Guest’ with Alex’s excellent French accent, and when Harry (Gaston) fell off the stage. We were really impressed with all the hard work and effort that had gone in to making the costumes (particularly Miss Griffith’s teapot design!), set and props, and those of us who had siblings who were performing were slightly embarrassed but still very proud.

Next week we are looking forward to more skiing, and of course having a day off on Monday!
