Nurture in King’s Park

Nurture in King’s Park

This year in King’s Park, one of our school improvement priorities has been to improve inclusion, wellbeing and equality amongst our learners.  We aim to ensure that we meet the needs of each individual within our school.  One of the ways in which we are able to do this is through the introduction of Nurture Groups.

Nurture groups are run all over the country and have been developed around the six principles of nurture:

Our Nurture Groups currently run twice a week and involve children from P1 – P7.

Children who attend the groups may do so for a variety of reasons:

We have social skills groups where children have the opportunity to work on turn-taking, sharing, and tasks to help with conflict or issues in friendships or loneliness.

Some children have experienced loss through bereavement or parental separation. We use social stories to discuss these difficulties and look at the ways in which we can manage our emotions in order to develop the children’s emotional toolkit and resilience.  We use the Emotion Works programme to support children in identifying triggers that make us feel certain ways and then look at strategies that can help us to improve our self-regulation, a key skill for adult life.

Our groups offer a welcoming, safe, relaxing environment where we build positive relationships and support the growth and development of the children. The children who have attended the groups so far have provided us with positive feedback which we hope to build upon as we develop Nurture throughout the school.

Children are referred to our Nurture groups by class teachers, the Senior Leadership Team or in discussion with parents.  If you have read this information and have a concern about your child, please contact your class teacher in the first instance.

We would like to take this opportunity to say a huge ‘thank you’ to our PTA.  Without their support, the Nurture Room would not have been possible.  The PTA has raised significant funding to support the purchasing of resources and furnishing of our Nurture Room.   It is greatly appreciated by our pupils, staff and wider community.  We are very keen to expand next session in order to offer more support to more children.  We are also hoping that parents too can make use of the room and in time hope that we can have parent support groups benefitting from the space too!

Building the King’s Park Community and supporting all within it is an important part of what we are striving to achieve.  Our Nurture Groups are a very important part of our journey to achieve this!
