P5a Term Overview

Hello Primary 5 Carers and Pupils,

So far during this time learning from home I have been blown away at the effort, creativity, focus and positive attitude that you have all had. I think you are all doing amazing and that is Carers as well as Learners, thank you all for your hard work. Outlined below is a brief overview of the type of activities that we will be doing for this term as we continue to learn from home. I am also going to take this opportunity to say that I m more than happy, in fact glad when I receive questions from learners and carers as communication between us throughout this time is paramount, please ask any questions you may have. Similarly I have been giving you all a daily timetable, this is a guideline of what you could do in the day. I appreciate some tasks will not be completed and others not started. This is fine and normal in a classroom as well as at home. If we continue to work as hard as we have been as a class I am sure we can make the most of these difficult times and come out the other end having learned lots of new things.

Literacy

This term we will be focusing on non-fiction writing such as report writing, persuasive writing and writing/reading for information. We will make the most of children having access to the internet for longer periods than they typically have in school and try and maximise this advantage of home learning by linking our literacy activities into our rainforest topic as much as possible (I understand children have varied access to the internet). There will be some activities focused on creative writing as well.

Children will be doing research activities to find information and facts and will then write about what they have learned and display their work in various forms such as posters and leaflets or tasks with a focus on; conveying information, persuasive writing, describing events or explaining a process. We will also be undertaking listening tasks where children will watch video clips and practise taking notes and selecting the key information from the clip. Likewise children can develop their talking/presenting skills through Seesaw video and audio clips. We will also continue with spelling tasks, reading comprehension tasks and other activities that help us to develop our tools for writing and reading.

Numeracy and Maths

This term we will be focusing on practical maths activities that pupils can do at home through Seesaw activities, Education City, Sumdog and incorporating outdoor learning to study measure (length, volume, weight, perimeter and area), money, time, data handling, shape, symmetry and angles. In numeracy we will be doing consolidation of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division work, fractions and decimals using various strategies. Where possible we will link these activities to topic work.

Health and Wellbeing

In Health and Wellbeing we will be looking at keeping ourselves safe, hygiene, healthy eating, getting fresh air, exercise and sleep. PE activities will be shared by Mrs Campbell through Seesaw and pupils will be encouraged to use these and the Joe Wicks activity sessions in addition to outdoor activities where possible. We will also be doing activities to address emotional health and personal and social development such as emotional check-ins, encouraging pupils to share and discuss their learning and news through Seesaw and through a variety of activities which promote kindness, respect, gratitude, responsibility, confidence, resilience, perseverance, growth mindset and emotional awareness.

Science

Through various Seesaw and online activities and pupil investigations we will learn about matter and the properties of solids, liquids and gases. We will learn about the physical state and energy in atoms and molecules and the physical change in matter from one state to another due to temperature or pressure.

Topic/IDL

Rainforest – planet earth/biodiversity and independence. Biological systems ,topical science as well as People, Place and Environment.

The children will be investigating the geographical aspect, ‘What is a rainforest? And where do we find them?’ They will learn about the vast biodiversity and biological systems through researching the different plants and animals. We will explore the 4 different layer systems as well as the climate and weather patterns. The important role our rainforests have and the effects deforestation has on our planet will also be investigated. Children will also be encouraged to explore how their lives compare and contrast to the different people living within the tropical rainforests.

Within our science activities we will focusing on looking at different food chains and food webs within different habitats. We also hope to touch upon exploring the genetics – looking at inherited and non-inherited characteristics. We will be tapping into different sources on the internet ,such as BBC schools, asking children to research and present findings on Seesaw (written and oral), set experiments and ask for feedback  and set fun, practical learning activities for children to enjoy with their families during this time!

Please get in touch if you have any questions,

Mr Taylor
