P5A Are The Champions!

This week in P5A…

We’ve had a very busy start back after our short, but well-needed break.

Now that Miss Griffith has marked our numeracy assessments, we are spending time finding out our ‘gaps’ and looking at what we need to learn in order to fill them. This week, the Pascal and Pythagoras groups have worked on the ‘bus method’ of written division, while the Newton group have reviewed their own knowledge of division, in addition to looking at two different strategies to use when solving missing number sums – asking “how many more?” or “what’s the difference between?”.

Literacy has also been very busy, revising our 50 spellings from the past 5 weeks and practising our copying skills to improve our handwriting. We also did some more reading work on identifying the key purpose of a text.

We have worked really hard on our Victorian house displays, and can’t wait for you to see them (and the interactive videos) when you come for parents evening. Episode three of Victorian Diaries was all about the terrible working conditions in Victorian factories. We learnt about how the phosphorus used to make the matchsticks strike could harm or kill the factory workers. Consequently, during our writing session this week, we learned how to write a persuasive letter using strong wow words and polite but firm language, to convince the factory owners to improve the working conditions.

Finally, we were delighted to be the first winner of the brand new ‘P5 Daily Mile Champions’ trophy for the week. We look forward to a rematch with P5B next week, to see if we can hold on to our crown! Next week also sees the arrival of World Book Day, and we are really excited about coming to school in our character costumes.
